Thomas Cole vs. Wang Jian

Thomas Cole and Wang Jian have a similar art piece.  Art and nature is the theme for both art pieces. Thomas art piece is vertical and Wang art piece is horizontal.  However the similarities are open area and an unknown place.  Thomas's art piece shows after a thunderstorm and it's dark on left side covered with trees.  It looks like a hidden unknown place while the right side has a river and little amounts of little of trees and light.  Also in Wang's art piece shows the same.  The top shows a mountain separated from the bottom and it also looks likes the mountain is also unknown and dark like the woods with the dark clouds.  I personally like Wang Jian's art work because I am interested Asian arts.  I am familiar with these art works because when South Korea was ruled under Japan.  Many people in Korean still have these art works and Korea has developed these art works as well.

Week 5 - Pot Luck and Video Night

This week on Art 100C, we did a pot luck and a video night event.  I am thankful for those who brought food to share.  We were all supposed to bring something, however I did not manage to bring anything.  I am sorry, but thank you for sharing.  Next time I will bring something to share.  Video night was great, however I did not have a chance to make a video in class because I do not have a laptop to bring to class.  I think it is great to do the weekly assignment by making a video.  Personally I think it is easier, however it would be awkward.  I would make the video if I was alone and making the video at home.  During class, I noticed many students making their videos, however I could not hear them due to the class talking and having fun.  I do not think it will work out during class time unless everyone is quietly making their videos.  It would be great if we did another pot luck and I will make sure I will bring something next time.

Vasily Kandyinsky vs Rebecca Purdum

Both artist Vasily Kandyinsky and Rebecca Purdum was both born during the 20th century.  And both has a style of abstract.  Also, somewhat of a nonrepresentational art or nonobjective art.  Like abstract art, the painting or drawing does not have a meaning or represents an object.  This goes back to the question what is reality.  What is real?  Art has to do with your imagination.  What you feel maybe what you see.  Both paintings has different colors and very colorful.  Vasily Kandyinsky seemed like he thought a lot about his final product of his paintings.  He often drew comparisons between nonobjective paintings and music.  While painting, he pointed out music does not represent anything outside of itself.  He stated it is composed with sounds and pitches affecting people and painting composed with different colors and shapes arranged on the surface.  The product Chin Up is amazing because how it was made.  Hand art, protect with rubber gloves, however the colors and layers of paint looks amazing.  Art does not have to look pretty.  Art is anything and everything you can think of with shapes, form, colors, and lines.

Kitagawa Utamaro vs. Edgar Degas

These two artists has a almost the same style.  Kitagawa Utamaro and Edgar Degas both have painted someone getting their hair combed.  These paintings has a naturalistic and abstract style to them.  In some ways, the paintings might seem the same.  However, artists are usually influenced by one's art.  In this class someone combing their hair for them or getting their hair combed.  Though the do have the same style the paintings are drawn differently.  One has a robe and bathed while dried and the other is a women right after their bath and doesn't want their couch wet so she's sitting on a towel.  These two paintings is naturalistic, they do happen in daily life.  Often mothers brushes their daughter's hair because they cannot do it. However, it seems like whoever is brushing the hair is a maid.  I believe they are maids because one can brush their hair or they cannot because they can't physically do it.  However, most rich people ask maids to brush their hair for them.

Week 4 - What is Reality?

This week on art 100, we look at cave art and compared The Matrix and Inception.  Honestly, last lecture was boring to me, however this lecture I enjoyed.  The pictures of the cave art was very interesting.  It was interesting because back then people expressed their thoughts and feelings through art not by writing.  It seemed like there was a class structure divided as well.  I believe this because the well drawn drawings were in the front of the cave as well as huge paintings.  And as you go deeper in the cave I saw that, it seemed like whoever enjoyed painting or drawing was towards the back of the cave.  Also because of some the art was on top of one of another.  Some of them were well drawn, however it was art and we visualized what was drawn at that time.
The movie part of the lecture was very interesting.  I haven't seem Inceptions, however I knew I was seeing it.  Although, I really want to see.  Also, The Matrix I haven't seen in a while, I don't quite remember some of the movie since I was young.  I really want to see it again.  I believe I watched it because of the action!  However, now that I'm in college.  What is reality?  It seemed to question me.  Two realities of different people's realities are the same.  It is connected with art because the artists wants others to view his own special reality.

Maya Lin vs. Vincent Van Gogh

Maya Lin and Vincent Van Gogh are both artists, however very different people and personalities. Maya grew up living with art and studied art at Yale wanting to be an architect. Architecture has somewhat of an art. They draw and make the buildings we see and live. Where in Van Gogh didn't have an interest in art until the age of 27 and he only had 10 more years to live. Also he moved to Paris to learn about art and became aware of the new art movement with light and colors. I believe Van Gigh didn't live a pleasent life, living in a life of knowing when he will die. Later on in his life he cuts off one of his ear because of an argument with an artist. Then later committing suicide by shooting himself to death. I believe he was only close to his brother, however no love from his family. On the other hand Maya Lin seemed very close to all her family and had much support from her family. On the picture of the book her picture he is happy and smiling. Van Gogh's self-portrait looks sad since he was drawing himself and hiding his right ear he cut. Maya and Van Gogh at different times of course Van Gogh's time was very hard, but I'm glad his name still is known.

Week 3

This week on Art 100, we learned about art's history. Art is really old and it doesn't have to be made by a human. The first art of a face was marked non-human made. It was interesting because it seemed like a face which a human would make, however made by nature. Not only that art can be anything, whether it is a painting, sculpture, drawing, etc. It was also interesting to see the old art looking new with fine art and materials you would see in the modern days. Most of the art were drawing and painting, and now we don't see them much because society now uses photograph. A simple picture can be used to see who and what. I feel like maybe painting and drawing is dying because of modern use of photography.
