Week 15 - New Media / Virtual Worlds

What is beauty? What defines beauty? What makes something or someone beautiful? During this week in art 100, we watched a little bit of Hamlet. And this movie defines beauty. Beauty is a lie, women wearing make up; their beauty wearing make up is a lie. I see women not wearing make up not beautiful. It is covering their natural beauty.  Because of the media society perception changes. Whatever we see women on the movies, advertisements, and media we define most of them beautiful. Because of this we believe that all women should be like them. Society suffers because of this. Everyone gets in the band wagon and want to look beautiful. They start to change there appearances. Everyone has there own charm. And it does not come from the media, it comes from yourself.

Week 14 - Images that Think

Today in art 100, we received our to do list of projects. There were so many to choose from. I wanted to do and go to all of them. Some included projects and museums visits. They all looked fun and exciting. the P3 which are 34 points each LACMA, MOCA Grand Ave. or Little Tokyo not Pacific Design Center, Getty Center, Getty Villa ,Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, Hammer Museum, Westwood, Long Beach Museum of Art, and Museum of Jurassic Technology, Culver City. So many museums to choose from. The P4 projects were Sculpture Experience, Painting Experience (Graffiti Writing at Venice Beach Legal Art Walls), Earth Art Project, and Photography Project (Time based photo project). They all sound so much fun! And lastly, a Counter factual Identity project that you'll post on through Facebook. I only have done and gone to some of these, however it is worth another go.

Week 12 - Documentary Film: Terminal 5

This week in Art 100, we had a pot luck again! Also, we watched a Documentary Film: Terminal 5. It was an interesting film. It really sucks because it was not successful because I would have loved to go see it. Also would like to see John F. Kennedy airport. I really like each of there art from great artists. It gave me a little bit of modern art. I like how they did not destroy the building in use of a new terminal 5 for faster airplane flow. However used the preserved the building to have an exhibit. It saddens me because the documentary showed the artists' art come out and how they did it and now there is no more of it. I think they should of added more security so that they could not touch the art work or not even have a party at all.

I really like to take pictures. Not with phones, however it is a really nice way to point and shoot. Someday I wish to own a SLR camera. Not only do I like to take pictures with an SLR camera. I like and take black and white photograph. It gives a sense of how people who invited cameras took their pictures, black and white. I always wonder what is a world with out colors? Black and white photographs shows me.

Getty Center not the Getty Villa

When I was younger, I have been to the Getty Center with my cousin and brother. I remember going and hated the place because I thought it was for old people. I did not really enjoy myself walking around looking at art. Always playing around the water fountains, I enjoyed the water fountains and I still do. However the tram is pretty exciting. Now, as i grew up and now went to the Getty Center. I relived my memories, but I enjoyed it differently. It was a different experience now that I went. I enjoyed all their exhibits and all the artists' works. I especially enjoyed their nature walk around the plants and flowers. I remember always making a wish and trying to make a basket in the middle of the ring. It brought back so much memories when I was younger doing it now. Anyways there are so much art! Their security is very tight. You are not able to touch anything or cannot pass a certain line to view the art and there is a security guard in every corner.

Getty Villa not the Center

When I heard there was a Getty Villa I was shocked. I never knew there was a Getty Villa. I only went to the Getty Center and heard about the Getty Center. I really like the Getty Center and now I like the Getty Villa, as well. I honestly thought it was the same when I heard there were both. But it is really different. Lots of art! It has a two floor gallery and a restaurant! After going to the Getty Villa I could see the similar parts of the both. I heard it was the owners home and made his collection of art in his home. You can even make art yourself. I had a lot of fun and I will defiantly will go again.

Earth Art - Griffith Park

My family and I always take a hike every Friday at Griffith Park. It is known for it's observatory center, however there are multiple hiking trails in front of the it. It is about a one and half hour hike from the observatory center to the top. We go when the sun is not up so it would not be sweating and fewer people because parking is a pain. From recent weather condition it has been very chilly. Also due to heavy winds there were leaves and branches everywhere. With one of the branches, I used it to create a trail from the start to the top. It was also my walking stick to help me to the top of the mountain. However, walking at this trail I realized nature created earth art. The gusts left behind huge amounts of leaves and branches on the ground. Also I noticed that people hiked on a mountain to make a trail. So they looked like steps. It was a faster route, instead of walking around the mountain you can climb this man made steps to a certain point. At a certain point we rested a I saw some of the area did not have electricity and it made me remember our art project of no electricity.

Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre (1787–1851)

Camera Obsura

Louis Daguerre (Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre) was born near Paris, France on November 18, 1789. A professional scene painter for the opera with an interest in lighting effects, Daguerre began experimenting with the effects of light upon translucent paintings in the 1820s. Louis Daguerre regularly used a camera obscura as an aid to painting in perspective, and this led him think about ways to keep the image still. He formed a partnership with Joseph Niepce to improve upon the photography process Niepce had invented. Niepce, who died in 1833, produced the first photographic image, however, Niepce's photographs quickly faded.Louis Daguerre made an important discovery by accident. In 1835, he put an exposed plate in his chemical cupboard, and some days later found, to his surprise, that the latent image had developed. Daguerre eventually concluded that this was due to the presence of mercury vapour from a broken thermometer. This important discovery that a latent image could be developed made it possible to reduce the exposure time from some eight hours to thirty minutes.

"Boulevard du Temple", taken by Daguerre in 1838 in Paris, was the first photograph of a person. The image shows a street, but because of the over ten minute exposure time the moving traffic does not appear. The exceptions are the man and shoe-shine boy at the bottom left, and two people sitting at a table nearby who stood still long enough to have their images captured.

Week 11 - Visual Culture / Visual Literacy

This week on Art 100, we learned there are 4 types of literacy. The 4 types of literacy are text literacy, visual literacy, network literacy, and one that Glenn made up education literacy. I do not believe the education literacy is going to fail. However, I do believe it might improve because of the amount of people using computers and technology. We are in the generation of technology and computers are smarter than most of human beings. This could be a problem because their would not be any "teachers". Computers will teach in the future and we will learn from them. We also saw some clips of The Reader which is about a women who rather admits she murdered someone, but does not want to admits she cannot read or write. I'm pretty sure this movie's setting was a long time ago because most people can now read and write. Back then people were less educated and I do not think people should be ashamed back then. On the other hand, today I believe it is ashamed if you cannot read or write. With new technology, there is no reason why people cannot read or write. We also saw some commercial and it was very funny and I thought it was interesting. Lastly, we saw more presentation. It was better this time, however this time were shorter presentations.

Romare Bearden vs Fred Tomaselli

Romare Bearden and Fred Tomaselli almost have identical paintings. Both of their work have many different faces, eyes, nose, and mouth. They both mixed and matched every part to someone's face, eyes, nose, or mouth. It is very interesting to see. However Fred Tomaselli's painting looks more as a painting than Romare Bearden's painting. It is because Romare Bearden has a dark shading due to his pencil he used to draw his painting. On the other hand, Romare Bearden only used paint to draw his painting. Fred Tomaselli's painting has much more of a color than Romare Bearden's painting. Fred Tomaselli used more of a red tone and Romare Bearden used more a dark tone. In Romare Bearden's painting I believe he used the dark tone because his people in this paintings look African American. Where as, Fred Tomaselli looks like a different kinds of race, but made into one white man. Although I like both of the artists' paintings. I like Fred Tomaselli's painting because it is cool because he painted only one man, only his face and his shoulders with differents kinds of body parts and other kinds of objects. It looks kind of weird because this is a human being, but we do not see this in a human. We only see this in art.

Week 10 - Avatar and Presentation!

This week in Art 100, I was very excited to get to see part of Avatar. I have not seem the movie and I have heard it is a good movie. I would like to see it now since I kind of watched it during class time. At first I was not sure if it was Avatar. I started to question if it was Avatar or not, however as the movie went on and I notice the theme was the same as Avatar. Even though I just watched little clips of the movie, it seem really awesome. I wonder if our world is going to be like that in 100 years or so. I really want to see the movie now. After the movie we talked about the movie by going back to reality. Jake is paralyzed and in this world where he becomes an avatar, he could walk and run. He could do whatever he can with this avatar. So in this case where Jake is paralyzed does he see reality as him running and walking or is his reality when he is paralyzed. After we had a class discussion we then went to the presentation. To be honest the presentation needs to be better. I could hardly hear the speakers and to me it seemed like a boring lecture. Now I do not know if mine is going to good, however I will do my best. Please speaker louder! So we can all hear you. I hope we have more class meetings like this and hope the presentations will get better.

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres vs Berthe Morisot

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's and Berthe Morisot's painting are both oil on canvas. They painted these oil paintings around the same year and both paintings have a girl. Now Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's oil painting of the girl looks very realistic and posing for the painting. On the other hand Berthe Morisot's oil painting of the girl does not look realistic and looks like the girl did not pose for this painting, an ideal image on the painters head. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's oil painting used very dark bold and dark colors. The room is very dark and I believe it looks like she is thinking. However Berthe Morisot used very light colors and the girl is tying her hair. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's oil painting does not really look like an oil painting. It's very sharp and has the image of the real girl in the painting. Berthe Morisot's oil painting does look like an oil painting with the lines all around the painting. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's oil painting of the girl looks like she is rich or have a rich family. Her hair is very perfect and I am guessing somebody done her hair for her. She also have lots of accessories and furniture that many rich people had at that time. On the other hand, Berthe Morisot's oil painting of the girl does not look very rich. She is doing her own hair and does not have very nice accessories along with some furniture. One thing I noticed is Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's painting of the girl has a mirror and Berthe Morisot's girl painting has a hand held mirror. I like Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's oil painting of the girl because the girl looks realistic, however I like Berthe Morisot's oil painting because it looks like a real oil on canvas.

Paul Noble vs Sol LeWitt

These drawings are both architecture drawings. Paul's drawing of his architecture drawings looks like a barbie doll house. It is very open yet looks very cool with how many floors there is and it does not look very simple to build. The support for the building looks very cool. He used different supports here and there throughout his building. On top of that, he even have a helicopter. What happens if it rains in his house? There seems to be no walls around the house so wind, rain, and snow can come inside.  Sol LeWitt's drawing of a room is very unique. It looks so REAL! Looking at the description is shows that she used white crayon and black pencil. How can see make it look so real? Her drawing of this room looks like when see first moved here and did the walls maybe. There are no furniture and very simply. Or it might be her ideally room and how it should be. Same goes with Paul, he might of drew that because he wants a house like that with a helicopter on the roof. I like Paul's drawing of the house better. It is very unique and I would like to live there. No house would look close to his in this century but it could be a good home.

Raymond Pettibon vs Elise Engler

Their art murals look very similar. One is from the east coast of New York and the west of coast of Los Angeles  however they have the same idea and picture. Elise drew same little animals on her mural and Raymond used very large animals with no heads or a mans face. Elise's drawing almost looks like words with art. They are straight and a lined while Raymond's drawings are all over the murals. It almost looks like Elise's drawing is telling something with the use to the same little pictures. There are many different kinds of drawings on hers almost telling a story. She used many different kinds of color with a white base to make it stand out. Raymond's drawing is mostly black and white and very bold. There are some color which makes them stand out. But the interesting part is the animals have maybe his face or no face. He changed them into weird animals. I like murals a lot because they are big paintings. It is not one big picture. In these art pieces there are something going on everywhere on their work. I like Elise's drawing better because it has small drawings and very clean. Raymond's drawing is not bad but it seems very dark and shows some negative drawings.

Week 10 - Drawing

This week in Art, we learn about the gestalt process and why we need to turn it off when we are drawing. We need to turn off the gestalt process in our brain because when drawing we define what we are drawing too hard. Then we believe drawing is hard or I suck at drawing. Everyone is good at drawing, it is just that they need to turn off the gestalt process before drawing. I notice that when drawing give the given image, when the first image was shown everyone thought of as easy because they were lines. As the the second image was shown it started to get harder and harder to draw. When the third images was shown, I heard a big sigh. Somebody in the class did not turn off gestalt process. The third images were hands. I have to admit hands are hard to draw. It was good that the image was upside down because nobody have guess on what we were drawing. It helped a lot to turn off the gestalt process. My finial project came out pretty good, however the body and the hands were huge when the head and the face was small for his body. I think that was because we drew it from an upside down view. But overall I enjoy drawing and I will always remember to turn off my gestalt process.

Lights Off

This was a cool art project! I do not believe society can pull a day without can electronics or lights. Society now lives among them and attached to them. We find it so fun and excited when there is a black out among of neighborhood. Everyone comes out and get together and maybe watch the stars for once. It is so rare that society come out and get together because of electronics. It is also rare to see the stars in the sky, light pollution. I have to admit it was very hard to go one night without electronics and electric. I mostly cleaned my room and went to bed earlier. It was even harder because down the hall my family was using electric and electronics. I could hear them laughing because the television was on. Most of my time was wondering why we live in a world with these devices attached to us. Society has changed in many ways. Soon enough the world is going to taken over by electronics and computers. They will be running everything and society should fear this.

Finding Art

Royalty-Free Images: Tire Marks On Pavement

This is not our art we found on Cypress College Campus, but it is somewhat of our piece we chose. When we are born, we are given an equal amount of power. We got this idea from this art piece that our group chose. Everyone is created equal, however it changes with our roles in life. On Cypress College rarely we see a normal car on campus. However students often find Campus safety cars and police cars drive on campus for the safety and protect of fellow students. They drive on campus to get to a destinations at campus the fastest. I believe this is fair, but they have a good amount of power among society. Some of them do abuse it, and it is wrong. How can a role or a job earns so much power? The students here at Cypress College will soon find it a normal behavior among society and soon want to drive on campus. Students fantasy are only met on video games; they came drive anywhere and run over people. Money is also gives some power. It gives power because money buys anything. Get in trouble? Buy a lawyer and nothing will happen.

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte vs The Last Supper

Georges Seurat and Leonardo da Vinci's paintings are similar in a way. They both a mass of people on their paintings. However, one is outdoor and one is indoor, they have the same concept. In both paintings, they are eating and chilling. In Georges's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte the people are on shore relaxing in the shade next to the water. It is a Sunday and some are having a picnic with friends and family. In Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper they are having a meal with Christ's friends or family after his restoration. In both paintings the people in the paintings do not have expressions. Georges Seurat's painting A Sunday on La Grande Jatte eye view is the couple on the right. The viewers tend to look at them and pick them as the eye view because they are draw the biggest. It is usually the middle like Leonardo da Vinci's painting The Last Supper the eye view is Christ which is the middle and every seems to talk about him. However, everyone in the painting is very important because they are in detail, but not like the eye's view. These paintings are very famous paintings and I like both paintings. I like both paintings because they both are very large paintings, not only that it is very detailed. However, just by looking at the paintings you can tell which one is older because of the brightness of the color.

Raphael vs Manuel Alvarez Bravo

The two art from the artists are angels. Raphael's oil painting has maybe a mother of two angels playing with the cross.  This oil painting has lots of light. Darkness has an image of evil, in this case light has an image of good, angels. Also the oil painting has lots of bright colors. The family are also very pale, which means very innocent. However, Manuel Alvarez Bravo art work is a photograph. His photograph is in gray scale, however because of the sunlight shinning it has a white scale also. Also like Raphael's oil painting, Manuel Alvarez Bravo's photograph have angels in his photograph. Again projecting an image of good innocent angels. However, in his photograph these angels are stature and in Raphael's oil paintings they look almost real. Although Manuel Alvarez Bravo's photograph is black and white, his picture effects give the photograph an image of the angels being good.  I'm pretty sure he made the effects like that.  I like both art works because in Raphael's oil painting I really like the bright colors and I like Manuel Alvarez Bravo's photograph because I like photographs that are black and white. I have been in a photograph and I used black and white photo paper.  It was very cool because we live in a world of colors and now with digital color photograph lots of people do not get a chance to use of black and white photo paper or photograph.

Week 6 - The Razor's Edge

This week in Art 100C, we saw a movie called The Razor's Edge and talk about Performance Art artist Marina Abramovic. The Razor's Edge was a interesting movie to me, although we did not see the whole movie I got what the movie was about. Larry the main character experienced going to war during War World 1 and witnessed his buddies getting killed. However, returning back home he changed. Instead of getting a job as a stock broker and getting married; he wanted to go the long way instead of the simple way. He gave up everything and the simplest life to live. Normally, people will choose the simplest route to live your life. Like I, I would of chosen the simplest route and live my life. I am at a point where I do not know what I want to do, therefore I would maybe chose the simplest route. I would really know what I want to do and finally take that simplest road to my life. The performance art artist Marina Abramovic was very interesting. Her work is very amazing. She is limitless and she makes her art herself. She makes her art pieces that it is her last piece of work in her life. When I saw her art it was truly incredible.

Thomas Cole vs. Wang Jian

Thomas Cole and Wang Jian have a similar art piece.  Art and nature is the theme for both art pieces. Thomas art piece is vertical and Wang art piece is horizontal.  However the similarities are open area and an unknown place.  Thomas's art piece shows after a thunderstorm and it's dark on left side covered with trees.  It looks like a hidden unknown place while the right side has a river and little amounts of little of trees and light.  Also in Wang's art piece shows the same.  The top shows a mountain separated from the bottom and it also looks likes the mountain is also unknown and dark like the woods with the dark clouds.  I personally like Wang Jian's art work because I am interested Asian arts.  I am familiar with these art works because when South Korea was ruled under Japan.  Many people in Korean still have these art works and Korea has developed these art works as well.

Week 5 - Pot Luck and Video Night

This week on Art 100C, we did a pot luck and a video night event.  I am thankful for those who brought food to share.  We were all supposed to bring something, however I did not manage to bring anything.  I am sorry, but thank you for sharing.  Next time I will bring something to share.  Video night was great, however I did not have a chance to make a video in class because I do not have a laptop to bring to class.  I think it is great to do the weekly assignment by making a video.  Personally I think it is easier, however it would be awkward.  I would make the video if I was alone and making the video at home.  During class, I noticed many students making their videos, however I could not hear them due to the class talking and having fun.  I do not think it will work out during class time unless everyone is quietly making their videos.  It would be great if we did another pot luck and I will make sure I will bring something next time.

Vasily Kandyinsky vs Rebecca Purdum

Both artist Vasily Kandyinsky and Rebecca Purdum was both born during the 20th century.  And both has a style of abstract.  Also, somewhat of a nonrepresentational art or nonobjective art.  Like abstract art, the painting or drawing does not have a meaning or represents an object.  This goes back to the question what is reality.  What is real?  Art has to do with your imagination.  What you feel maybe what you see.  Both paintings has different colors and very colorful.  Vasily Kandyinsky seemed like he thought a lot about his final product of his paintings.  He often drew comparisons between nonobjective paintings and music.  While painting, he pointed out music does not represent anything outside of itself.  He stated it is composed with sounds and pitches affecting people and painting composed with different colors and shapes arranged on the surface.  The product Chin Up is amazing because how it was made.  Hand art, protect with rubber gloves, however the colors and layers of paint looks amazing.  Art does not have to look pretty.  Art is anything and everything you can think of with shapes, form, colors, and lines.

Kitagawa Utamaro vs. Edgar Degas

These two artists has a almost the same style.  Kitagawa Utamaro and Edgar Degas both have painted someone getting their hair combed.  These paintings has a naturalistic and abstract style to them.  In some ways, the paintings might seem the same.  However, artists are usually influenced by one's art.  In this class someone combing their hair for them or getting their hair combed.  Though the do have the same style the paintings are drawn differently.  One has a robe and bathed while dried and the other is a women right after their bath and doesn't want their couch wet so she's sitting on a towel.  These two paintings is naturalistic, they do happen in daily life.  Often mothers brushes their daughter's hair because they cannot do it. However, it seems like whoever is brushing the hair is a maid.  I believe they are maids because one can brush their hair or they cannot because they can't physically do it.  However, most rich people ask maids to brush their hair for them.

Week 4 - What is Reality?

This week on art 100, we look at cave art and compared The Matrix and Inception.  Honestly, last lecture was boring to me, however this lecture I enjoyed.  The pictures of the cave art was very interesting.  It was interesting because back then people expressed their thoughts and feelings through art not by writing.  It seemed like there was a class structure divided as well.  I believe this because the well drawn drawings were in the front of the cave as well as huge paintings.  And as you go deeper in the cave I saw that, it seemed like whoever enjoyed painting or drawing was towards the back of the cave.  Also because of some the art was on top of one of another.  Some of them were well drawn, however it was art and we visualized what was drawn at that time.
The movie part of the lecture was very interesting.  I haven't seem Inceptions, however I knew I was seeing it.  Although, I really want to see.  Also, The Matrix I haven't seen in a while, I don't quite remember some of the movie since I was young.  I really want to see it again.  I believe I watched it because of the action!  However, now that I'm in college.  What is reality?  It seemed to question me.  Two realities of different people's realities are the same.  It is connected with art because the artists wants others to view his own special reality.

Maya Lin vs. Vincent Van Gogh

Maya Lin and Vincent Van Gogh are both artists, however very different people and personalities. Maya grew up living with art and studied art at Yale wanting to be an architect. Architecture has somewhat of an art. They draw and make the buildings we see and live. Where in Van Gogh didn't have an interest in art until the age of 27 and he only had 10 more years to live. Also he moved to Paris to learn about art and became aware of the new art movement with light and colors. I believe Van Gigh didn't live a pleasent life, living in a life of knowing when he will die. Later on in his life he cuts off one of his ear because of an argument with an artist. Then later committing suicide by shooting himself to death. I believe he was only close to his brother, however no love from his family. On the other hand Maya Lin seemed very close to all her family and had much support from her family. On the picture of the book her picture he is happy and smiling. Van Gogh's self-portrait looks sad since he was drawing himself and hiding his right ear he cut. Maya and Van Gogh at different times of course Van Gogh's time was very hard, but I'm glad his name still is known.

Week 3

This week on Art 100, we learned about art's history. Art is really old and it doesn't have to be made by a human. The first art of a face was marked non-human made. It was interesting because it seemed like a face which a human would make, however made by nature. Not only that art can be anything, whether it is a painting, sculpture, drawing, etc. It was also interesting to see the old art looking new with fine art and materials you would see in the modern days. Most of the art were drawing and painting, and now we don't see them much because society now uses photograph. A simple picture can be used to see who and what. I feel like maybe painting and drawing is dying because of modern use of photography.

Week 2

This week in Art 100, we saw videos from Youtube.  The Youtube videos were on the Remix Culture and how all over the States were making remixes of this one original clip/movie.  When were we looking at these clips, in my head I thought we were going to make something like this.  All of the remix clips were very creative even though it was not the original.  These creative ideas are the new culture and generation through social networking and youtube.
